I'm looking for a new road bike, my current ride is just the wrong geometry for me and likely too big. I've been talking to a couple of bike shops and have a fit/test ride scheduled for later this week. I fully understand the value of riding a bike before purchase. I've also found a bike on Craigslist that looks promising. It's a 2014 carbon framed bike from a famous manufacturer with 105 components. The geometry is very similar to the bikes that the shops are setting up for me (Synapse, Domane). The seller is asking $1500 and the blue book price on line shows a high of $950 for excellent condition. I told the seller this, and he believes blue book is just a straight depreciation and not an indicator or actual sales value. I told him I wouldn't be opposed to anything under $1000, and agreed that I'd contact him when the weather favored an outside test ride (it's 10 degrees F and expecting 15-30' of snow here this week).
For those of you who've sold or bought a bike recently, how accurate are the values on the blue book?
